The village

Situated on the southern coast of Cyprus, in Limassol district, Apsiou village stands at the foothill of Limassol forest, 17 Km north of Limassol and 600 metres above sea level. Its location is ideal, since it is found half way of any direction someone chooses to follow. Larnaca and Paphos airport is only one hour drive from Apsiou. The river Garillis flows along the southern part of the village among the vines, olive, carob and almond trees.

The population of Apsiou is 300 inhabitants.
Apsiou is one of the villages of the "Grande Commandarie"; region that produces the unique for i
ts taste sweet wine "commandaria" from the crusaders' times.

The name of Apsiou comes from the ancient miners that came from Naxos (Greek island), thus they were "Naxiotes" "Apsiotes", "Apsiou". This has a point because in the region of Apsiou is observed a great variety of types of rocks (copper-pyrite, iron-pyrit, special soil and clay for tiles, bricks, pottery).
For that reason, many geology scientists show great interest in the place and visit the area to study its unique geological structure.

Apsiou is a very attractive place, for those searching for a quiet hiliday and yet within easy driving distance of the island's other reasorts and spots of interest. Someone can scroll through its narrow streets, along its nature trails and breathe the clear air in the countryside, felling how wonderfull it is to experience village life.
In winter and springtime, colourful flowers and shrubs cover all the place. It really is a blessing of God.
To discover the full beauty of the area, car hire is highly
recommended.

The village is divided into two parts. As you enter the village from the main road (limassol Kalo Chorio) you will find the recently built houses of Kato Apsiou (Lower Apsiou) and Ayios Epiphanios church.
Following your way to Pano Apsiou (Upper Apsiou), you will find the more tradition
al, mstone-built houses of the old village, lying among them, Blue cottage. At the end of the road a very old church "Panagia Galaktotrofousa" (dating back to 1740) is found hidden in the cypress trees.

Many tavernas are found on your way coming from Limassol and at the villages around. They serve excellent variety of freshly cooked local dishes at very reasonable prices. Do not miss to try "meze" (about 25 several small dishes from Cyprus cuisine).
And of course, one night with music, food and why not...dance is a MUST in a Limassol tavern with a guitar, bouzouki, accordion or piano. The hosts can tell you everything about it.

In the village there is a grocery as well as two coffee -shops (the one open air) which make kebab every Friday and Saturday alternately.

A telephone booth is found near Agios Epiphanios church.
Larnaca airport is 87 Km from Apsiou and Paphos airport is 75 Km away. A taxi or car hire can be arranged to meet you at either airport.
Cruises to Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Rhodes can be arranged.

"The friendliness of the people was to be experienced to be fully appreciated. The people here in the village took us into their homes and hearts and attending a service at the Amirou monastery was an unforgetable experience."
