Amirou Monastery
Panagia faneromeni Amirou holy
monastery.
The monastery of Panagia faneromeni Amirou stands at the foodhill of
Kakomallis´ forest, just 3 Km east of
Apsiou. The view from there is
superb! Someone's eye can reach up to the sea of Zygi and admire the
panoramic openess of the landscape.
The monastery was established on the 12th century. It had the special
privilages of a "royal monastery" given from the byzantine royalty. At first it was a
monk monastery and
during the 17th century it was at its greatest glory with 100 monks.
According to the legent, the name of Amirou was taken by the Emir from
Syria who had a blind daughter by birth. He brought her in Cyprus for
treatment and as they were sailing along Cyprus coast, his daughter saw
light at some spot. Following the light they came at the spot were the
monastery's healing Holy water is. At that point, the icon of
VrefoKratousa (holding the Holy infant) was found. Emir's daughter,
washed her face with the Holy water and she regained her sight.
The Monastery is dedicated to "Life-giving Spring" celebrating
on Sunday after Easter and also the 23th August (Assumption day).
Now the monastery is inhabited by nuns. Visitors are accepted daily from
8.00 am until 1.00 pm and 4.00 pm to 7.00pm. On Fridays, the monastery is
closed and is open to the public on Sundays, all day long.
